Ted Humble-Smith
Shell Campaign
The latest worldwide Shell campaign shot by Ted was a combination of traditional model making, conventional retouch and 3D work. Iris led the way with the BTL campaign, with JWT using imagery for the ATL and Gyro International creating the DM.

A beautiful glass droplet created by Wesley West (with some help from the people who usually create glass objects for the likes of Professors not photographers) was the central element for the images. It was very important to keep the droplet looking real with the correct distortions and reflections, which we felt would be quicker to achieve with conventional methods rather than pure 3D. We then positioned the different objects in the backgound to be visible through the fuel drop, giving the impression that the objects morphed when viewed through the fuel droplet. This ranged from holding a simple bank note in position to launching confetti bazookas across the studio. The in house digital team at Iris then went to work on the composites to create a set of images that could be sent all over the world where each region could manufacture their own variations.
